Saturday Recap - Ferris State (FCC)

Future conference opponent Ferris State downed the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs 6-2 in the Florida College Classic 3rd Place game.

BULLDOGS WIN!!...  wait, what?

If losing 6-2 to a decent team isn't enough, i'm going to throw some other negatives at you...
  1. Drew Olson & Andy Welinski both did not return to the game after leaving.  Injured?
  2. Derik Johnson was booted from the game, his 4th ejection in 13 games he's played.
  3. Both Matt McNeely & Aaron Crandall played.  Both gave up 2 goals per period.
  4. The Dogs gave up a shorthanded goal.
  5. UMD did in fact lead the game until the 2nd period.
Well, fantastic breakdown right?  Oh come on, be happy!

The first period started a little bit on the "here we go again" side.  Ferris State got on the board first by way of Justin Buzzeo.  It wasn't immediately into the game, but I guess I wanted to see the Dogs hit the board first after last night.  Krause was able to tie the game up at 1's when Charlie Sampair intercepted a Ferris pass, passed it up to Bergman who fired a shot that Krause tipped in.  It was a breathe of fresh air actually, the first goal of the weekend!  Hendo was dragged down 16 seconds later which gave way to an absolute PPG snipe by Caleb Herbert to give the Dogs the 2-1 lead.

The second period...  I'd love to tell you we came out flying and scoring and passing and hitting and blaw blaw but that just isn't the case here.  It was a 3 goal period for Ferris State; 3 goals on 8 shots.  Unfortunately for UMD, they didn't have an answer for any of the goals.  To make things even better, the short handed goal I was talking about before?  It came in this period.  It was the first goal that started off Ferris's scoring spree.

The third period wasn't much better.  The Dogs came out of the gate behind 4-2 with hopes of cutting the lead and eventually evening the score up, but neither happened.  Derik Johnson got the boot, his 4th of the season, which put Ferris State on a 5 minute power play that wreaked havoc on UMDs chances of catching back up.  Ferris was able to score 2 before the penalty was killed and the period expired.  And thats how the cookie crumbled.

It was an interesting game.  After Johnson's boot it was almost comical to me.  Typical Bulldogs I guess?  This could be my fault too right?  RWD (@runwiththedogs) told me it was my fault, the blog is bad luck.  It could be?  She's probably right.  But I'm just having to much gosh darn fun with all this technology jazz to stop!!

Scoring for the Night:
Caleb Herbert:  1-0-1
Adam Krause:  1-0-1
Wade Bergman:  0-1-1
Joe Basaraba:  0-1-1
Drew Olson:  0-1-1
Charlie Sampair:  0-1-1  (First Point as a Dog!)

Matt McNeely:  16/20
Aaron Crandall:  4/6

The Bulldogs get a little bit more of a break now before they host Michigan Tech at Amsoil on January 11th-12th.  Michigan Tech, who has struggled in WCHA play the first half, looked to rebound a little bit in the tournament they're in.  Probably shouldn't take them to lightly.

Anyway, see ya all then!

Cheers!

GO DOGS!!
