Friday Recap - Alaska Anchorage

The University of Minnesota Duluth defeat the University of Alaska Anchorage 5 to 1 in Alaska.

Well, let's celebrate!

Finally the Dogs find some scoring sticks and rack up a few goals.  Do we look tough again?  :)

Literally thought the Dogs looked excellent when they flew out for the first period.  Things were clicking instantly resulting in a Jake Hendrickson goal just 1:26 into the game from Keegan Flaherty.  Hendo just happened to be in the right place at the right time when Flaherty's shot slid right in front of him, allowing him to chip it in.  Believe it or not that was the end of the Dog's scoring for the period, and to no surprise they led in shots 12-6.

I noticed they slowed down towards the end of the 1st period and it carried over a little bit into the second as well.  Maybe it just looked a little slower because of the olympic sized rink?  Who knows.  Anyway, Cameranesi was able to snipe UAA goalie Chris Kamal, like literally one of the greatest wristers from Olson and Basaraba.  Then just a minute later, Chris Casto put a Caleb Herbert rebound by Kamal to put the Dogs up 3-0.  Dogs finish the period outshooting UAA 11-1 in the period.

I thought for sure UMD would coast through the third, but they actually kept up the intensity in the 3rd period.  Chris Casto got his 2nd goal of the night and 2nd goal of the season from Cody Danberg off a draw.  Then 3 minutes later Cameranesi looped around the zone and sniped Kamal again to put the Pups up 5-0.  Things were looking up for McNeely's first collegiate shutout, but someone forgot to knock-on-wood as Tyler Currier of UAA was able to put one by him.  No idea how this goal looked as the UAA guy filming was a tad behind the play.  Third period was pretty chippy, if you couldn't have guessed it yourself, but the Dogs did finish off with a 5-1 win.

The Dogs played a pretty good game.  I thought they started off crisp and finished crisp, but middle play was a little bit chilled.  Progress from last weekend none-the-less.  McNeely played a nice, solid game in net for the dogs and should earn him another start tomorrow.  Casto obviously played pretty well, earning his first 2 goals of the season.  I thought the team as a whole played pretty dang good.

It was a much needed 2 points and win for the Pups who have been riding the struggle bus so far this season.  As a Bulldog fan we know that the team plays well on Friday nights, but tomorrow might be a different story.  We can only hope that the Puppies brought their brooms up with them to earn their first, believe it or not, Saturday win of the season.

A sweep to close out the first half of this season is something that this team would love to have and desperately needs!
