Weekday Hockey: Notre Dame at Minnesota

Tonight the Minnesota Golden Gophers host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in what should be a fabulous hockey game.

Minnesota is currently ranked #1 in both major polls while Notre Dame is #2 in the USCHO poll and #3 in the USA Today poll.

If Mario Lucia is checked from Behind, does Don get mad at his own team?

Overview:

Notre Dame is playing pretty well as of lately.  They are currently on a 6-game win streak with sweeps of Michigan State and Lake Superior.  During that strand of games, they have outscored opponents 26 to 9.  Goaltender Steve Summerhays has played very well for the Irish allowing, on average, 1.53 goals per game.  Fast paced team lead by Anders Lee should put up quite a show against Minnesota.

Minnesota is also playing pretty well as of lately.  The Gophers are coming of a huge win, err destruction of former #1 Boston College where they put on a show to win 8 to 1 at home.  They are currently on a 5-game unbeaten streak with wins over Nebraska Omaha and Colorado College.  During that stretch they have outscored opponents 26 to 9, but they're going to need to score without the help of Erik Haula, who is out with a shoulder injury for at least a week.  Credit to Adam Wilcox, freshman goalie who is allowing only 1.63 goals per game.

Verdict?

Either teams have lost after scoring first, so is that the way this one is going to go?  I would say this game is going to be a lot closer than the Boston College game.  Honestly, I wish I could be there.  Notre Dame will have to adapt to the 10 feet of width Mariucci has that Notre Dame's ice does not, but I wouldn't think that would be to much of a problem.  If the Gophs can skate like they did against Boston College I would say this game is theirs to lose.  But who knows who is going to show up based on how the season has been for this team.

Enjoy.
