Beanpot Round 1: NU, Roy defeat BU while BC goes for 4th

What a day of hockey in Boston!  My predictions unfortunately were thrown off, but what's new?

The classic Beanpot tournament officially began with the puck dropping between Boston University and Northeastern yesterday afternoon, and gosh how I wish I could have attended.  Northeastern entered the game on a four-game winless streak, hoping to pull out an upset victory over #13 Boston University, making their senior class the first class not to win a Beanpot title since 1965.  Boston University, on the other hand, had plans to start playing with more consistency and changing the path their currently on to one that heads to Pittsburgh.

Freshman Kevin Roy, who some may know as the scoring leader among all freshman in the nation, scored three times, one per period which was all Northeastern needed to defeat the Terriers 3-2.  Although I do want to give credit where it is earned, and Boston University did fight back, scoring with  a little over a minute left, but Northeastern kept BU goalie Chris Rawlings in net, allowing them to finish off the first game of the tournament with a "W".

Northeastern vs. Boston University Beanpot Highlights

The night game was played between the defending national champions, Boston College, and Harvard.  Boston College had high hopes coming into the tournament as they're battling to achieve their fourth title in a row.  Harvard's goal was to do everything they could to prevent this from happening, as they haven't been able to win the title since the 1992-'93 season.

Once Northeastern had upset Boston U, many people began wondering if this was the year where the two teams that have dominated the town for so long, would finally miss the opportunity to claim the city as their own.  Unfortunately, Harvard was outgunned.  Harvard played strong for the most of the first period, until Quinn Smith struck right before the period expired to put the Eagles up by one heading into the the first intermission.  From then on it was the Boston College show.  The Eagles scored two in the second period and another in the third, ending the game 4-1 to advance them to the finals.

Seriously watch the highlight videos.  It's great college hockey and very good quality.  Plus, freshman Kevin Roy (ROY = Rookie of the Year?) scores a hatty.

The puck drops for the championship game next Monday at 7:30 ET, and the consolation game will be played before it at 4:30.  Without checking I would assume NESN will broadcast the games, as they did for the ones yesterday, so if you can, watch.

Boston College has won four times as many Beanpot titles as Northeastern has, so I'm definitely pulling for the underdog here.  I'll have a preview out next Sunday, so if you're interested, check back!

That 2nd NU goal was hilarious. The BU player actually passed it through his own empty crease! All Roy had to do was redirect it in.
